The ground state of being for a goat is to be planning their next escape from whatever you’ve put them in. A true lover of freedom, Martina the Doe came up with this reworking of her namesake Martina McBride’s  “Independence Day” in celebration of the 4th.

Well she seemed all right by dawn’s early light
Though she looked a little suspicious to me.
She tried to pretend she wasn’t scheming again
But the dents in the fence left proof enough for a week.
And she may only be four years old this summer
But she always seems to be trying to get away
So I took myself down to the fence supply store in town
On Independence Day.

Well ,word gets around in a small, small town
They said she was a troublesome goat
The fence was sound but she stood her ground
And the fence found it was on the losin’ end
Some folks whispered and some folks talked
But everybody looked the other way
And when time ran out there was no one about
On Independence Day.

(Chorus in Goat)

Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning.
Let the goats be strong, let the fence be wrong
Roll the gate away, let the farmer pay
It’s Independence Day.

Well, she lit up the sky that fourth of July
By the time that I come home
I just put out the grain
And wrote down their names
And waited for them to come home.
Now I ain’t sayin’ it’s right cause it’s wrong
But maybe it’s the only way.
Talk about your caprine revolution
It’s Independence Day.
